Fall Prevention

According to the National Institute of Health, each year more than 1.6 million older adults got to the emergency room for fall related injuries. Our goal at Home by Choice is to reduce this number. Our trained staff can help reduce the risk of falls in the home of your loved one today.

Here are six simple fall-prevention strategies that you can do in the mean time:

Make an appointment with your doctor

Be prepared to answer questions to aid in your fall prevention plan.
  • What medications are you taking?
  • Have you fallen before?
  • Could your health conditions cause a fall?

Keep Moving

Physical activity can go a long way toward fall prevention. Talk with your doctor about what activities may be right for you.

Wear sensible shoes

Wear shoes that are sturdy with nonskid soles.

Remove home hazards

  • Remove clutter from walkways
  • Move coffee tables, magazine racks and plant stands from high traffic areas
  • Secure loose rugs
  • Repair loose floor boards or carpeting immediately
  • Store everyday use items within easy reach
  • Clean spills immediately
  • Use non-slip mates in showers and tubs

Light up your living space

Keep your home brightly lit to avoid tripping on objects that are hard to see

Use assistive devices

  • Hand rails for both sides of stairways
  • Nonslip treads for bare-bood steps
  • Raised toilet seat
  • Grab bars for shower or tub
